"Buses run daily from Kota Kinabalu Bus Station, but the journey is long and takes nine hours. It is always wise to bring plenty of water and something for lunch (toilet usually on the bus). Tawau Airport is located 28 km from Tawau. It is one of two airports in Sabah with immigration counters for international flights, the other being Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Tawau Airport is also the airport for Kunak and Semporna. It is also the closest airport to the diving islands of Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai.
The airport consists of one terminal and has flights to destinations such as Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur. There are also flights to the Indonesian islands of Nunukan and Tarakan. The airport is also an international destination from Bandar Seri Begawan by RB Link (a Brunei airline). Hainan Airlines also operates charter flights from Guangzhou.
The airport is minimalist, so facilities are limited. Nevertheless, passengers can grab a snack to fill their stomachs or a drink to quench their thirst in the shops, or buy a few newspapers and magazines to read while killing time at the airport. Smoking is prohibited at the airport and smokers are only allowed to smoke in designated areas outside the terminal building. There is a shuttle bus between Tawau and the airport with a fare of RM 10, but there are only 5 buses a day and the last bus leaves at 5:00 PM. If you wish to take a taxi, taxi coupons are available in the terminal. The fixed price for a taxi from the airport to Tawau is RM 45. The journey to Tawau city center takes about half an hour and it takes an hour to get to Semporna town.
The airport can accommodate eight planes at a time and the parking lot can accommodate 500 vehicles. In addition, there is a police station opposite the terminal building. The airport has facilities such as restaurants, exchange offices, free Wi-Fi and airport shops.
