Redang Trekking

Ben van Wijnen

"A jungle trekking on trails on the island of Pulau Redang is probably one of the best methods to really learn more about the flora and fauna on the island, including several rare species. The jungle trekkers who want to see these unusual species, however, must turn to the service of Redang's trekking guides."

Pulau Redang consists of 2 mountain ridges. The western has 4 hills and the eastern ridge has 3 hills. The Sungei Redang, the most important river on Redang, flows between these two mountain ridges. At the same time, a road runs across the island from north to south. The airport is also located here, where Berjaya Airways with passengers from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Along this road you see sheep, goats and other pets and flora, such as pitcher plants and mangrove forests.
But there is a second way since a few years. This second way takes you to Long Beach. You can reach this road from the jetty at Kampung Baru by turning left near the airport at the large sign on which the distances to the various resorts are stated. If you walk or drive on this, turn right towards the long cell phone tower on the side of Laguna's staff quarters. This way you reach Long Beach, where the road behind the resorts continues.

Those who want to take a walk can walk from Long Beach to the jetty. This fairly well-entered and marked path connects Long Beach and Teluk Dalam with the Taaras Resort. The route goes through the jungle and has a number of uphill and downhill sections. From the paved access road behind the resorts of Long Beach, look for the start of the path somewhere between Redang Bay and Coral Redang resorts, which is marked by a water pipe and electrical wires that enter the forest.
That's the start. At the end of the path you will come to a mangrove swamp and you will come to the end of Teluk Dalam Besar, the empty beach next to Berjaya beach. You will pass large trees on this path. If you are unsure of the route, contact your resort staff for a guided tour of this route. This tour is 2 km long.

Another jungle trek goes from Long Beach to Teluk Kalong, where the resort of Redang Kalong is located. From the jetty of Laguna you go to the beach of Teluk Bakau and walk about 200 meters around the bay until you reach the end. Then follow a path that runs inland and turn left towards the beach. At the end you will come to the northern beach of Teluk Kalong. Then walk along the beach until you reach Redang Kalong.
We go on! At present there is no easy path that connects this part of Kalong beach even further with the next beach where the Amannagappa resort is located. You will have to travel through the forest for approximately 0.5 km. However, once you are in Amannagappa, there is a walkway that runs around the rock to southern Kalong beach where the Mutiara resort is located.

As with other islands, the fauna on Redang is impoverished in comparison with the mainland. No large animals are found. Domestic goats and sheep are probably the largest mammals. The rest of the island's fauna consists of macaques, a shy little deer (kancil), 8 species of bats, different rodents, different types of lizards including the large water monitor, more than 50 species of birds, 4 species of crabs, 84 species of butterflies and others insects. The flora on Redang includes 16 species of wild orchids, some of which are considered rare. Redang also contains a fairly large number of traditional medicinal plants, such as the tongkat ali.
