Shahbandar Jetty

Ben van Wijnen

"Shahbandar Jetty is the most popular jetty used by visitors to get to Pulau Redang. This jetty can be found right opposite to the tourist information center in Kuala Terengganu at the river side, where you will also find Bukit Puteri."

The Shahbandar Jetty

Terengganu is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Malaysia, known for its beautiful islands. Tourists come to these islands to relax under the sun on sandy, clean beaches or to enjoy water sports such as diving and snorkeling. Of the different islands, including Pulau Kapas, Perhentian, Bidong, Redang is the most visited.
Redang is easily accessible by ferries. The Shahbandar Jetty is one of two that are used to reach Redang. The other jetty is in Merang. The jetty in Terengganu is located just north of Chinatown (Kampung Cina). You can easily get by taxi or bus from Kuala Terengganu airport at the jetty Shahbandar. AirAsia, Firefly and Malaysian Airlines are arriving here.

The Shahbandar Jetty is used by a number of resorts in Redang, such as Coral Redang, Redang Lagoon and Berjaya Redang. The ferries to these resorts leave at 9 am, 10 am and 3 pm. The return rate per person is approx. RM100 and it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach Redang.
The Shahbandar jetty is also located directly opposite the tourist information center and post office in the center of Kuala Terengganu. You can also reach the Jetty on foot from the bus station in Kuala Terengganu. The walk takes about 15 minutes. It is close to the famous attractions Chinatown, Puteri Hill, Maziah Palace and various shops, restaurants and other interesting places.

You will also see some waiting areas on the jetty, belonging to a number of different resorts on Redang Island. These offer ferry services to tourists, who have booked their stay in the respective resorts. They have bought an additional transport package with the ferry.

The Shahbandar Jetty in Kuala Terengganu

For example, Berjaya Redang Beach Resort has such a combination package, which has an inclusive ferry service. If you have not booked such an extra package, you can travel in a private boat. In any case, they charge double (about RM100).
There's also a ferry, which leaves at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The times can be changed depending on the weather conditions and the tides in the sea.

A package tour is the easiest way to travel from Terengganu to Redang Island, without making it difficult to buy separate tickets.
The secured parking garage at Shahbandar has a very limited parking space (I believe it is less than 30) and will probably fill up quickly. It is best to spend a night in a nearby hotel and leave your car there in the parking garage or car park. Especially parking on weekends is difficult. Many then move to Redang and leave their car on the mainland.
