MATAKING

The Reef Dive Resort

The island of Mataking is mainly visited by divers, snorkelers and people who want to rest. There is only one resort on the island: The Reef Dive Resort. It is an exclusive and romantic destination in the Celebes Sea, just 40 minutes by boat from Semporna on the east coast of Sabah in Malaysia. The waters surrounding the island are crystal clear and easy to dive and snorkel destination, although there are also many honeymooners travelling to.
There always will blow a soft, tropical sea breeze on the island and the resort, which is designed according to the traditional architecture. It offers a simple elegant and sophisticated accommodation for up to 100 people in a quiet and cozy environment.
The resort has a marine biologist and an eco-team, because like so many other islands in this region, sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs. Every year there are about 50 to 80 pits dug on the island by the turtles, where they lay their eggs in. The eggs are brought the next day to a protected spot on the beach and reburied again, where the sun, the eggs can hatch.
Depending on the season, guests to the resort can regularly witness Turtles coming to lay their eggs on our distant shores, and when the time is right (depending on the season) watch baby turtles being released back into the sea from our hatchery for the first time!

The underwater post office of Mataking

In 2006 they sank an old wooden ship near the reef. The ship was not used for several years and it was decided to sink it in their famous reef near the resort. It was part of a conservation program in order to maintain the reef.
This created an artificial reef, which attracted many tropical reef fishes. The wreck became a home for other incredible marine creatures, which are plentiful around, in the clear tropical waters surrounding this spectacular island.
The “MATAKING 1” was an old 40 foot wooden cargo ship, which was used many years ago. A mail box was placed on the front of the wheel house of this shipwreck. Divers can buy a postcard at the resort’s gift shop and place it in a special sealed waterproof plastic postal bag. Divers can now post their letter underwater. A special rubber stamp was designed to depict this unique postal service. The mail box will be cleared two times a week.
This is the First and only one in Malaysia. There are only 5 similar underwater post offices in the world.
