LUMUT

The town of Lumut was opened in the 17th century. This was proved by the Perjanjian Pangkor that had been signed in the year 1874. The treaty was signed between Raja Perak and an English Company to demolish all the sea robbers and pirates port in Lumut town.
Formerly Lumut was known as Tanah Merah. According to history, it was explored by a son of Raja Selangor named Raja Engku Busu. A few years later, he and his followers had been attacked by pirates. From then, Lumut (Tanah Merah) was a "gost town". Even the cemetery of Raja Engku Busu is unknown but his name is still famous. The hill named Bukit Engku Busu located behind Lumut town. The once little-known fishing town has since become the home base of the Royal Malaysian Navy.

Nowadays Lumut is the departure point to Pulau Pangkor, situated 84km south of Ipoh. The Lumut Bus Station is near to the town centre, a five minute walk to the ferry jetty. A food court has been set up for the convenience of travellers and locals. The jetty for Pangkor Island has been beautified. The council at Lumut has built a multi-storeyed carpark for those who are going to Pangkor. You have to leave your car in Lumut and take a ferry across to Pangkor. During long weekends and public holidays, you can expect a horrific traffic jam in little Lumut of visitors going to Pulau Pangkor.

The jetty

Lumut is a quaint little town famous for its beautiful seashell and coral handicrafts. The best time visit this dreamy little haven is between the months of August and November when the Annual Sea Festival "Pesta Laut" is held. There are sea sports competitions, cultural shows and fun and food fairs for everybody both young and old to enjoy. Do check with the Perak Tourist Information Centre for the actual date the festival for the year.
In Lumut are a few Italian restaurants. Pubs and cafe have sprung up in recent years just some walking distance from the Orient Star Resort or jetty. If Italian food is not your style, there are a number of Indian Restaurants around and a few local food outlets where you can grab a simple bite.
