From Langkawi to Thailand
From Kuah to Koh Lipe
Ben van Wijnen

"The ferry departs from Kuah Jetty which is in Kuah Town, Langkawi. The pier is also called Jetty Point. If you have never been to Langkawi donít worry all the taxi drivers know where the pier is."

Ferry to Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe nicknamed the "Maldives of Thailand" and is one of the most wanted, but least visited islands in Thailand. Due to its southern location, it is not as busy as the tourist islands of Phi phi, Koh Lanta and Phuket. The best way to get there is not from Thailand, but to travel by ferry from Malaysia to Thailand via the island of Langkawi! The ferry to Langkawi to Koh Lipe is fast and much cheaper than arriving from another Thai island. Of course times change, and with that more tourists make a trip here every year.

The only way to reach the island is to take the ferry to the island of Koh Lipe. This means that you arrive internationally from Langkawi, mainland Malaysia or another Thai island. There are therefore customs formalities for you.
The only other alternative to reach Koh Lipe is with a private yacht, but then you have no reason to read this article!

Although there are posters with prices at almost every tourist office on Langkawi island, your hotel (reception) is the BEST place to buy your ferry ticket. The transfer from your hotel to the ferry terminal is included in all tickets. This means that you have an advantage. By booking through your hotel means that you are actually picked up at the right place, namely at your hotel.
What you should keep in mind:

* You need your passport when you book the tickets, because it is an international crossing.
* It is common throughout the island to charge a 3% service charge if you book with a credit card instead of paying with cash.
* Make sure you keep the receipt well. You must redeem this at the port for the actual tickets.
* The ticket price is approximately RM 120
* Transfer to Ferry & Ferry Ticket is included
* Ferry Company: SATUN PAKBARA SPEED BOAT (Langkawi) SDN. BHD.

Depending on where your hotel is located, you will be picked up between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM because it also stops at other hotels to pick up other passengers. It is an 11-seater passenger van with the words "Langkawi" on the side. It is an early morning transfer to the ferry.
It is a much smaller terminal specifically for international sailings than the terminal to Penang. When you arrive at the terminal, you must show proof of your ticket purchase, so keep it well and keep it ready! Once you have done that, you will receive a paper from the bus driver for your ticket and an immigration card for Thailand.

At 9 a.m. the announcement follows that you can go to the customs. Before you board the ferry, you must hand in your passport if they check your ferry ticket. In essence, you say goodbye to the most important item you have while traveling and hope that it reaches Thailand. On the ferry you look for a seat and then the crossing starts at 09.30, which will take an hour.
About halfway there is an announcement that the upper deck is now open for anyone who wants to look outside. Upon arrival at Koh Lipe, Thai customs will return your passport with a small white piece of paper. It is VERY important that you do not lose this because you need to leave Thailand!
There is an island surcharge of 200 Baht, which you must pay upon arrival. If you don't have a Thai Baht yet, there is a small office opposite customs where you can exchange money. Don't expect a good exchange rate!
Then it's time to grab a cold Chang beer and touch the crystal clear water.

This is just an example. This ferry also provides sailings to, among others: Koh Tarutoa, Koh Bulon, Koh Mook, Koh Ngai, Koh Lanta, Phi-Phi and Phuket.
Naturally, prices are subject to change.
