"Explore mysterious forests between land and sea on this naturalist-led boat safari into the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park – home to majestic eagles, mischievous macaques, fish that “walk,” colourful fiddler crabs, shy otters and sleeping bats."
The most beautiful excursions that you
can make by yourself on Langkawi. The best is to rent a car at the
reception of your hotel. A car rental will cost you about 30 till
40 US or Euro per day. One of the most beautiful excursion is not
mentioned. That's the one to Pulau Payar. I didn't mention it, because
this island doesn't belong to the Langkawi Archilpelago. But don't forget
to make this excursion and visit the site of Pulau
Payar

Pulau
(Island) Dayang Bunting, located 17.6 km from Kuah.
This
island is the second largest island within the langkawi archipelago. Nestled in the midst of lushly forested hills on this island south of Pulau Langkawi is Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), the largest lake in all the islands of Langkawi. The outline of hills and rocky outcrops on one side of the lake takes the shape of a pregnant maiden lying on her back. But the name of both the island and the lake is attributed to a legend of a lovely fairy princess who married an earthly prince. Her first child died shortly after birth. So sad and depressed was she that she buried the child in the crystal clear waters of the lake. Before she returned to her fairy adobe, she blessed the waters so that henceforth any childless maiden who bathed in the lake would conceive thereafter.
Dataran
Lang
or "Eagle Square", is the latest addition
to Langkawi's famous landmarks. Situated near the Kuah Jetty, it
features scenic ponds, bridges, covered terraces, two restaurants and
two jetties. Soft breezes makes it an ideal spot for leisurely walks and
a tranquil setting for dinning in the cool evenings. Spectacular
cultural shows provide the perfect finishing touch. The main attraction of the square is the magnificent statue of the
reddish brown eagle (actually a Brahmany Kite) majestically poised for
flight. According to local folklore, Langkawi derived its name from the
eagle or "lang" short for "healing".
In old Malaysian "kawi" denotes reddish brown - hence
Langkawi means reddish brown eagle (kite)!
Telagah
Tujuh (Seven Wells) Located in the northwest corner of Pulau
Langkawi, Telaga Tejuh (Seven Wells) is a geographical marvel.
Legend has it that fairies used to come down to this waterfall to bathe
and frolic. The waterfall is so named because the cascading water is
broken by a series of seven natural pools. The lush green forest that
surrounds the waterfall adds a mystical touch to the splendour.
Gunung
Raya (mountain) Situated
12 km from Kuah is Langkawi highest mountain at about 893 mtrs. It is a
favourite haunt for nature lovers. The road leading to the peak of the
mountain takes about 40 minutes and one gets a good view from the top of
the island below and to the east where one can see the islands of South
Thailand and to the west are views of Kuah harbour and Mat Cincang
Mountain. Langkawi's satellite station is based right at the top in the
misty swirling clouds that often cover its peak.
Pulau Singa
Besar
is
an island that has been turned into a nature park come animal sanctuary
where visitors can view monkeys, deer, iguanas and peacocks roaming
about freely (no cages). Picnic on the pristine beaches and enjoy
swimming and snorkelling in the surroundings waters.
Sailing
can be done off almost every beach where you'll
find hotels and tourist areas along Kedah's coast and off-shore islands.
Many hotels and resorts rent out small sailing dinghy's and catamarans for
some thrilling action on the water. If it's more serious stuff you are
after, Langkawi Island is a good spot to charter a yacht either within
Malaysian waters or to other destinations such as Thailand or Singapore.
Sailing, especially on an ocean going yacht, is a wonderful way to explore
Malaysia's coast as well as being great fun for the whole family, littlies
included.
The Islands
Some nearby islands can be reached at low tide on foot. A short journey by
boat brings you to Gua Cherita (cave of legends), on its
walls, ancient writing can be seen which have yet to be deciphered.
Air Hungat
Village
Located
on four acres of land around Telaga Air Hangat (Hot Springs), about 14
km from Kuah, this modern complex includes a 3-tier hot spring fountain,
an 18-metre long hand-carved river-stone mural depicting the legends
that enshroud this location. Daily demonstrations of local crafts and
cultural dances and shops selling traditional handicrafts make it an
interesting place to visit.
The
Crocodile farm at Kubang Badak,
some 32 km from Kuah, covers about 20 acres and holds more than 1,000
crocodiles of various species. Here one can witness and photograph
crocodiles and alligators play and feed in a controlled environment that
closely resembles their natural habitat.
Underwater
World Langkawi, a marine showcase
featuring both fresh and seawater fish and marine life. Located on the
popular beach of Pantai Cenang, this newest draw card features more than
100 tanks of different sizes. The highlight is a giant tank housing
large species such as sharks, stingrays, groupers and green turtles.
With a 15-metre tunnel for visitors to walk through the visitor has a
spectacular view of the exhibits.
Laman Padi
Langkawi Laman Padi Langkawi's
latest attraction and one that should not be missed for agro-tourism
lovers. Located at Pantai Cenang, in the vicinity of the island's
popular beach resorts and just two minutes from the airport, Taman Padi
Langkawi showcases the history, heritage and development of the nation's
rice growing industry. Among the attractions here is a rice museum.
displaying artifacts, charts and photographs showing the significance of
padi cultivation to the country. Visitors have the opportunity to enjoy
a bird's eye view of the fields from a roof-top garden.
